FED:Kevin Rudd wins Twinings tea challenge
By Jennifer Chapman
SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - When it comes to tea, Kevin Rudd knows his leaves. The Foreign
Affairs Minister is the winner of the Twinings Australian Afternoon Tea Challenge.
The announcement was made at the Observatory Hotel in Sydney on Tuesday by Stephen
Twining, who is visiting Australia from London.
Mr Rudd wasn't at the event, but said via videolink he was thrilled.
"The win is a win for Australia's animals, with 10 cents from every tin going to the
RSPCA," he said.
"The other thing I'd say is how much I appreciate the support I've got right across
the Australian community, (I) thank them all for their votes in support of this particular
tea blend, and finally, to all the other competitors, including my grand competitor Alan
Jones ... but it's been great that everybody's participated in the competition with a
spirit of camaraderie and a spirit of raising funds for our charities of choice," Mr Rudd
said.
"So to everyone out there who supports the work of the RSPCA, can I encourage you to
get out there and support this particular blend because it helps all those animals out
there in need of love, care and attention."
Twinings invited 150 celebrities with the objective of creating a quintessential Australian
afternoon tea blend. There were 63 responses and they were eventually whittled down to
the top five, comprising Mr Rudd, Jones, TV host Kerri-Anne Kennerley, surfing champ Layne
Beachley and country music star John Williamson.
"Overall the standard of blending was very impressive," Mr Twining told AAP.
"To get down from 10 to five was a difficult task."
Each competitor was given access to the same Twinings ingredients and some of them
created smokey blends with a billy tea aspect, while others developed full-bodied blends,
strong in flavour.
"The whole objective here was to have teas created by an Australian for Australians,"
Mr Twining said.
There was a total of 85,000 public votes from across Australia.
The winning blend will be launched on Australia Day 2012 and will be on sale for a
year as a limited edition.

EGYPT PROTESTS (CAIRO)
Egypt's HOSNI MUBARAK has resigned as president and handed control to the military.
The president .. who survived 10 attempts on in his life over three decades of rule
.. bowed out after a historic 18-day wave of unrelenting pro-democracy demonstrations
by hundreds of thousands .. and finally more than a million people.
The news came in a brief statement from a grim-looking Vice President OMAR SULEIMAN
on national TV.
Power in Egypt now rests with the Armed Forces Supreme Council.
A massive crowd in Cairo exploded into joy .. and people waved Egyptian flags .. honked
car horns and let off celebratory shots in the air around the city of 18 million.
Earlier .. protests had spread from Tahrir Square to the state television building
and MUBARAK'S palace .. as he left with his family for the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh
.. and a report came in that police and protesters in the Sinai had clashed violently.
Within seconds of the news of MUBARAK's resignation .. US stocks on Wall Street were
up .. rebounding from earlier slight losses to solid gains.
CLIMATE GILLARD (SYDNEY)
JULIA GILLARD is reportedly planning to put a price on carbon emissions from July next
year .. with News Limited papers saying a multi-party climate change committee will be
presented with the proposal for the plan.
The scheme is to introduce the price for three or four years .. before an emissions
trading scheme comes into force.
The federal government appears to be planning that sensitive industries .. like the
coal and electricity sectors .. are compensated when the carbon price begins .. a move
that could likely to upset the Greens .. federal Labor's minority government partner.
The federal opposition opposes an emissions trading scheme.

states and territories has immediately been labelled a humiliating backdown by the opposition.
But doctors and health experts have welcomed a greater focus on community healthcare
delivered outside of hospitals.
ELECTRICITY NSW (SYDNEY)
The New South Wales government says if the opposition reverses the sale of the state's
power assets .. it'll leave them open to compensation claims worth billions of dollars

NSW: Family feud shootout killed innocent truck driver
SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - When two warring families planned a shootout in the carpark
of a suburban Sydney KFC, passing truck driver Bob Knight paid the ultimate price, police
allege.
As the 66-year-old Canberra man drove along Milperra Road at Milperra about 10.40pm
on June 25, 2009, he was hit in the head by a stray bullet and died.
Almost 10 months after the shooting, police on Wednesday charged six people - four
men and two youths - with Mr Knight's murder.
"What we have discovered through the investigation is there were two family groups
involved and friends of theirs," homicide squad Detective Inspector Pamela Young told
reporters on Wednesday.
"The allegation is that they met at the KFC carpark to fight each other, we allege
to fire shots at each other, (and) a stray bullet has left the KFC carpark and travelled
so far that it did hit Bob Knight as he was driving his truck."
Two men arrested at Greenacre on Tuesday night - Mustafa Mariam, 32, and Tarek Elvadar,
25 - faced Burwood Local Court on Wednesday charged with Mr Knight's murder and a charge
of affray.
Neither applied for bail and it was formally refused.
The others charged are expected to face Bankstown Local Court and Parramatta Children's
Court later on Wednesday.
Insp Young said three more people were expected to be charged with Mr Knight's murder
but are yet to be arrested.

Vic:Government urged not to renew train, tram contracts
By Shelley Markham
MELBOURNE, April 10 AAP - The Victorian government has been urged not to renew its
contract with the private operators of the public transport system, with a transport expert
saying it has been an expensive failure.
Academic Dr Paul Mees, of Melbourne University's urban planning program and an author
of a new report into the state's public transport, said the privatisation of Melbourne's
trams and trains six years ago had not worked.
"It has been an expensive failure," Dr Mees said.
The report was today rejected by the government.
However Dr Mees said by June this year, the privatised public transport system will
have cost $1.2 billion a year in public subsidies and fare revenues, and that figure could
rise to $2.1 billion by 2010.
"This is more than world class overseas operators such as Vancouver's Translink spend,
but we still have an inadequate system," Dr Mees said.
Melbourne University researchers compared Melbourne's transport system to Translink
in Vancouver, Zurich's Zurcher Verkehrsverbund and Perth's Transperth systems.
In the report released today they found the secret of success for those three companies
was high customer patronage and accountability.
"The easiest way to select a well performing public transport organisation is one that
has higher rates of customer satisfaction where the patronage levels are high and rising,
and where value for money is being provided," Dr Mees said.
"Under the system we have in Melbourne no-one is accountable for anything, everyone
can push responsibility onto someone else ... so no-one is ultimately accountable to the
community for the quality of public transport services that are delivered."
Dr Mees said the state government had an opportunity to improve the system and return
it to government hands without having to pay compensation to the private operators.
The franchise agreements between the government and Connex and Yarra Trams are due
to expire on November 30, 2008, and can only be renewed if the government gives notice
by November 30, 2007.
"It would provide a fantastic opportunity to build a new (government-run) organisation
from scratch," he said.
The Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) backed calls for the system to return
to public hands.
PTUA secretary Tony Morton said that since private operators took control in 1999,
passengers have endured "late services, more cancellations and some new but substandard
rolling stock."
"We have a golden opportunity in the next two years to set up an efficient public transport
agency modelled on those in the world's best cities," Mr Morton said.
A spokeswoman for Transport Minister Peter Bachelor said the report was flawed.
"The academics appear to have made basic errors in calculating their figures, including
failing to account for rolling stock lease payments for the new trains and trams provided
across the system, additional services added since franchising, and additional staff added
since franchising," the spokeswoman said.
"We do not accept the findings of the report," she said.
"We do not have any plans to change the current ownership structure."

Fed: Safety of ageing fleet called into question
The safety of Australia's ageing fleet of navy helicopters will be the focus of investigations
into a crash which killed nine Australian defence force troops in Indonesia.
The federal government is facing heavy criticism for its decision not to replace the
30-year-old Sea King choppers after one of the aircraft plummeted into a soccer field
during a mercy mission on Indonesia's quake ravaged island of Nias.
It's the worst naval flying accident in Australian history -- and Australia's deadliest
military accident since 18 servicemen died in the crash of two Black Hawk helicopters
in 1996.
NEIL JAMES, the Australian Defence Association executive director, has told the Nine
Network the Sea Kings would have been replaced earlier if enough funding had been allocated.
When other countries are retiring the helicopters, the government has extended the
life of the helicopters until 2015.
But defence force chief PETER COSGROVE and Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD are standing
by the Sea Kings.
Mr HOWARD, who toured tsunami ravaged parts of Indonesia in the same helicopter earlier
this year, says there's nothing to suggest there is anything wrong with the aircraft.
Witnesses to the crash say the helicopter's engine died while it was 30 or 40 metres
above the ground, before it crashed cockpit first into the field.
They have told ABC radio they heard the engine die before the helicopter crashed into
the ground and exploded into a fireball a few minutes later.
The bodies of the seven men and two women are expected to be flown home to Australia on Tuesday.

LATIN JAZZ ON THE AIRWAVES.(ArtÃculo Breve)
LATIN JAZZ EXPRESSIONS
WWSP 90FM Stevens Point, Wisconsin
Saturdays from 6-9 AM Central Standard Time
Hosted by Nick Marrero
We first met radio DJ Nick Marrero in September of 1997 when, together with DJ Ernesto Laboy, they hosted the first Latin jazz radio program ever in Hampton, Virginia, the "Latin Jazz Flight" for WHOV FM 88.1. Presently, Marrero is in Central Wisconsin doing the same thing on radio, but unlike Virginia, where he enjoyed a strong Latino fan following, he wages a tougher battle for Latin music appreciation in Wisconsin. Regardless of the demographics, his new listening audience appreciates good music and this keeps Marrero spinning the best of the world of Latin jazz. Marrero's radio program "Latin Jazz Expressions" is the first of its kind in central Wisconsin. The program has been on the airwaves for almost a year, and enjoys a growing audience and constant enthusiasm for the type of music being aired. Nick Marrero has been doing radio now for over 10 years and it's never been for money, only for the love of the music. He quotes: "Wherever I go, the music of Latin jazz will always have a voice." Nick Marrero can also be heard on web radio station at www.uwsp.edu/stuorg/wwsp/90fm/ram. "El ritmo esta vivo en Wisconsin."
JAZZ LATINO
KCLU 102.3 FM Cal Lutheran's Radio Station, Oxnard, CA.
Thursdays 8 P.M. to midnight
Hosted by Raul Rico Jr.
Percussionist Raul Rico Jr. is a member of the popular Latin jazz ensemble The Estrada Brothers, based in Oxnard, California. When not playing music on his conga drums or other percussion instruments, Rico is busy on the turntables and CD players of his radio program "Jazz Latino" on WCLU 102.3 FM every Thursday night. Rico claims he contracted salsa fever around 1973, spending most of his money at that time on salsa records, especially those from New York bands. Raised in a family that always loved tropical dance music and dancing, Rico's passion for music kept on growing to the point where he became a music collector and finally a percussionist. In 1983, to balance his passion for music, he decided to try spinning records at KCSB radio in Santa Barbara. Soon thereafter he was given a time slot of his own and a program he called "Onda Latina." Every Sunday for over 10 years, Rico spun salsa music on the airwaves of Santa Barbara. In 1993, Rico decided to leave KCSB and joined KCLU 102.3 FM, closer to his home. Today he continues to host his Thursdays "Jazz Latino" program as well as his "Saturday Night Salsa" program on Saturdays from 8-10:30 p.m. He also continues to perform with the Estrada Brothers band and several other groups. Somehow he even finds time to write CD reviews for L.A. Jazz Scene magazine and Latin Beat Magazine from time to time.

About SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM
WWW.SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM is a service designed to help bonafide shareholders of publicly traded US companies fight short selling. SqueezeTrigger.com has built a proprietary database that uses Threshold list feeds and short sale time and sale data from NASDAQ, AMEX and NYSE to generate detailed and useful information to combat the short selling problem. For the first time, actual trade by trade data is available to the public that shows the attempted size, actual size, price and average value of short sales in stocks that have been shorted. This information is valuable in determining the precise point at which short sellers go out-of-the-money and start losing on their short trades.
SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM has built a massive database that collects, analyzes and publishes a proprietary SqueezeTrigger for each stock that has been shorted. The SqueezeTrigger database of nearly 2.5 billion short sale transactions goes back to January 1, 2005 and calculates the exact price at which the Total Short Interest is short in each stock. This data was never before available prior to January 1, 2005 because the Self Regulatory Organizations (primary exchanges) guarded it aggressively. After the SEC passed Regulation SHO, exchanges were forced to allow data processors like SqueezeTrigger.com to access the data.
The SqueezeTrigger database collects individual short trade data on over 7,000 NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks and general short trade data on nearly 8,000 OTCBB and PINKSHEET stocks. Each month the database grows by approximately 50,000,000 short sale transactions and provides investors with the knowledge necessary to time when to buy and sell stocks with outstanding short positions. By tracking the size and price of each montha'a"s short transactions, SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM provides institutions, traders, analysts, journalists and individual investors the exact price point where short sellers start losing money and a short squeeze can begin.

Lipoplasty Challenge -- Man vs. Machine.
Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 06, 2011
One of the highlights at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) will be a panel featuring Barry DiBernardo, MD, Constantino Mendieta, MD, and Simeon Wall Jr., MD discussing the intersection of surgical artistry and technical expertise with the newest innovations in liposuction technology. "Lipoplasty -- It's Us -- Not the Machine" will be moderated by Steven Teitelbaum, MD.
"ASAPS members have always been devoted to achieving the best outcomes for their patients. We will have three leading authorities help the audience think about the interplay of their own skills with technology," said Dr. Teitelbaum of Santa Monica, CA. "Their presentations will provoke plastic surgeons to take a fresh and even painful look at how they are balancing an honest presentation of their own liposuction results with the demands of the marketplace for so-called "state-of-the-art" technologies."
Technology is transforming the plastic surgery industry in many ways. It provides manufacturers the opportunities to market new devices. Exciting names and promises of unprecedented results drives patients to plastic surgeons. "But whether they actually improve outcomes is the million dollar question," says Dr. Teitelbaum. Given the use of the internet as a growing means of how patients select plastic surgeons, the intersection of patient enthusiasm for these technologies and the results they actually give creates a marketing environment that can be confusing and morally challenging. The panelists will confront these issues, describe the methods they have used to achieve the outstanding liposuction results that have made them so well regarded, and debate the role of artistry versus technology in achieving beautiful liposuction results.
"The panel will discuss the magic of the artist that exists in us all, and how technology may help in certain cases, but does not define the vision," said Dr. Mendieta of Miami, FL. "No matter how technological we become, it is never the brush that defines the artist."
"Some devices can do a job the surgeon can not accomplish surgically," said Dr. DiBernardo of Montclair, NJ. "We will examine which of these have a good track record and which do not."
"I think it's important for us all to recognize what's giving us great results and what's just a marketing tool," said Dr. Wall, of Shreveport, LA. "Ultimately, our patients deserve to have the best results we can give them, not just a good marketing job."
