QLD: Qld youth earned among highest incomes, says 96 Census

BRISBANE, Dec 10 AAP - Queensland youth earned among the highest incomes in the nation,
according to 1996 Census figures contained in a report released today.

Youths aged between 15 and 25 earned a median $192 a week, along with their West Australian
counterparts -- just $1 behind youth of the same age in the Northern Territory.

The figures come from Queenslands Young People 1996, an Australian Bureau of Statistics
(ABS) publication on Queensland youth aged between 12 and 25.

Other findings included:

* 12 to 25 year olds represented 21 per cent of people counted in Queensland in the 1996
Census;

* a higher proportion (28 per cent) of young people in Queensland were living independently
than in any other state or territory; and

* 3.9 per cent of young Queenslanders were of indigenous origin. This was greater than the
national figure of 2.7 per cent.

Families, Youth and Community Care Minister Anna Bligh launched the publication here today.
